WEEK 13 - ENCYCLOPAEDIA TEXT TYPE

An encyclopedia or encyclopaedia is a reference work or compendium providing summaries of information from either all branches of knowledge or from a particular field or discipline. Encyclopedias are divided into articles or entries that are often arranged alphabetically by article name and sometimes by thematic categories. Encyclopedia entries are longer and more detailed than those in most dictionaries.

Encyclopedias have existed for around 2,000 years and have evolved considerably as a valued source of reliable information compiled by experts, printed versions found a prominent place in libraries, schools and other educational institutions.

The appearance of digital and open-source versions in the 20th century has vastly expanded the accessibility, authorship, readership, and variety of encyclopedia entries and called into question the idea of what an encyclopedia is and the relevance of applying to such dynamic productions the traditional criteria for assembling and evaluating print encyclopedias.

TASK 1.  Go to Encyclopaedia Entry - Taj Mahal and complete the tasks

TASK 2.  Go to Britannica Encyclopaedia and get familiar with the text type
TASK 3.  Go to Encarta Encyclopaedia and get familiar with this type of encyclopaedia

    - Compare the two types of encyclopaedias 
TASK 4. Choose a health topic from Britannica - take notes and write a summary
TASK 5. Go to Medical Economics and search a topic, then write a brief summary

 TEXT TYPE - REPORTS     

A report is a document that presents information in an organised format for a specific audience and purpose. Although summaries of reports may be delivered orally, complete reports are almost always in the form of written documents.

Reports are professional documents so need to be written in a formal and concise style. 

Reports use features such as tables, graphics, pictures, voice, or specialized vocabulary in order to persuade a specific audience to undertake an action or inform the reader of the subject at hand. Some common elements of written reports include headings to indicate topics and help the reader locate relevant information quickly, and visual elements such as charts, tables and figures, which are useful for breaking up large sections of text and making complex issues more accessible. Lengthy written reports will almost always contain a table of contents, appendices, footnotes, and references. A bibliography or list of references will appear at the end of any credible report and citations are often included within the text itself. Complex terms are explained within the body of the report or listed as footnotes in order to make the report easier to follow.
